Agent demos are easy to build, but earning a customer's trust inside the vehicle is not. The cockpit is screen-constrained, attention-scarce, and safety-critical. An in-car agent must understand this complex environment and the journeys that take place within it, following automaker policy, protecting personal data, recovering when services fail, and knowing when not to interrupt. In automotive AI, fluency is not the finish line. Trusted outcomes are.

That is the purpose of Cerence Agent Portfolio: to help automakers turn high-value customer journeys into productized experiences that coordinate specialized agents behind one safe, coherent, branded outcome.

Trusted Outcomes Need A New Industry Standard

A trusted outcome completes the customer's goal, fits the current context, keeps the customer informed and in control, protects data and permissions, and preserves the journey when a service or connection fails.

The Cerence Agent Portfolio focuses on aspects of the user journey where vehicle context and coordinated action materially improve outcomes: trip planning and charging, arriving and parking, dining on the way, managing vehicle ownership, and coordinating mobile life and work. Each journey brings together the specialized capabilities it needs. Cerence AI builds the vehicle-native capabilities, integrates partner services, and supports automaker-built and certified third-party specialists through a governed foundation. Our technology has shipped in more than 525 million vehicles across more than 80 OEM and Tier-1 partners, grounding this approach in automotive reality.

The Elements of a Trusted Outcome

The Cockpit Is Becoming The Coordination Point For The Journey

As vehicles become software-defined, more of the ownership experience is moving into the cockpit: navigation, charging, parking, work, payments, maintenance, entertainment, communication, and the smart home. The assistant is becoming the branded interface where help is available at the moment of need.

Vehicle-native context makes that help more relevant. Route, ETA, state of charge, cabin conditions, capabilities, and automaker policies enable agents to fit seamlessly into the journey instead of making the customer explain the situation from the beginning.

Why Siloed Agents Aren't Enough

Customers rarely experience their day as isolated tasks. A charging decision may depend on route, arrival time, calendar, dining, parking, range, and preferences. When agents operate in silos, the customer carries the context and manages the handoffs.

With permission, successful interactions help the system learn preferences, routines, and intent so future journeys require less explanation and fewer steps, enabling the assistant to become more useful over time while keeping the customer informed and in control.

A portfolio of agents becomes valuable when specialized agents share governed context, memory, permissions, journey state, and recovery. The promise is fewer handoffs, less repeated effort, better decisions across domains, and one coherent journey that goes far beyond isolated command and response. We address this through a common outcome standard across Cerence-built, automaker-built, and certified partner agents. It evaluates success within policy, latency, safety, confirmation, recovery, and customer-experience boundaries – requirements that become especially important as the cockpit coordinates more of the driving and ownership journey.

Orchestrating Everyday Tasks Through a Unified Agent Ecosystem

AgentLink, our A2A-compliant protocol, lets an automaker's assistant invoke a productized customer journey through one governed interface. Within that bounded journey, Cerence coordinates the specialized agents, scoped context, permissions, confirmations, and recovery needed to produce one coherent result. The automaker's assistant, which in some cases is Cerence xUI®, retains ownership of the overall conversation and cross-journey experience. CaLLM® complements this framework as an automotive-grade, model-agnostic intelligence layer that helps each journey select the appropriate model and cloud, edge, or hybrid deployment path.

One Coherent Journey, Coordinated By Specialized Agents

Together, these capabilities define the portfolio principle: each customer-journey product presents one clear capability to the automaker's assistant while coordinating the specialized agents, shared context, permissions, confirmations, and recovery required to complete that bounded outcome.

Imagine a driver asking the automaker's assistant for help getting to dinner after work. Traffic adds 25 minutes, battery reserve is tight, the original charger is busy, the reservation is at risk, and parking is limited. The assistant delegates that bounded dinner journey to a Cerence AI journey-level product. The driver states the outcome once: “Help me get there with enough charge to return and keep the reservation.” Within the journey boundary, Dining and EV Charging specialists evaluate reservation timing, route, battery, and charger reliability together, while Parking can contribute when needed. The journey returns one coordinated plan for the assistant to present for approval.

Multi-Agent Orchestration Behind a Single User Request

For customers, success should feel almost invisible. They should not have to learn agent names, repeat preferences, switch between apps, or wonder which service is speaking. They should get fewer interruptions, fewer repeated questions, and fewer unfinished handoffs.

The value comes from a productized journey that coordinates reusable specialists, shared journey context, and explicit confirmation, and recovery - without taking ownership of the automaker's broader assistant experience.

A Coherent Experience, Not A Bag Of Features

We build and deploy our Agent Portfolio with a simple customer contract in mind: be useful before being impressive; explain what you know and why you are acting; ask before consequential actions; make memory visible and correctable; and fail in ways that preserve safety, trust, and the overall journey.

Delivering on that customer contract across brands, regions, languages, and vehicle generations requires a common product framework. Cerence Agent Portfolio is built around six commitments:

  1. One coherent, branded experience. The assistant remains tailored to each automaker's identity, interaction style, policies, and customer relationship, avoiding a commoditized look and feel shared with competitors, while specialized agents contribute behind the scenes.

  1. Open interoperability, governed for automotive. AgentLink and the Cerence Agent Contract add governed routing, scoped context, policy enforcement, telemetry, certification, and lifecycle controls.

  1. Shared services, not repeated integration. Identity, consent, memory, vehicle context, entitlement, safety, privacy, telemetry, metering, and recovery should be reusable platform capabilities.

  2. Trusted outcomes must be earned. Agent Smarts is Cerence AI’s certification, evaluation, and measurement system for automotive agents. It establishes a common quality bar by evaluating whether agents complete high-value customer actions reliably, safely, and within policy before release and during operation.

  1. Cloud and edge are one product decision. Cerence AI supports cloud, edge, and hybrid patterns based on vehicle state, privacy, latency, and network conditions.

  1. Learning must compound without breaking trust. With permission, completed tasks improve memory, workflows, recommendations, and personalization through memory that is scoped, explainable, editable, and reversible.

Six Principles Behind the Cerence Agent Portfolio

What Trusted Outcomes Mean For Automakers

For automakers, the agentic cockpit is a long-term architecture, brand, and governance decision. Models, providers, and agents will change faster than vehicle programs, so the foundation must evolve without rebuilding the customer experience or surrendering control of data, policy, and brand.

The leadership opportunity is choice without fragmentation: combine automaker-built, Cerence-built, and partner capabilities while preserving one identity model, one policy posture, one interaction language, and one measurable standard for outcomes.

Our response is to separate the branded assistant experience from the productized customer journeys beneath it. The automaker's assistant remains the trusted face of the brand and owns the overall request, conversation, and cross-domain orchestration. Cerence AI journey-level products operate beneath that surface, coordinating the specialized agents and shared services needed to complete a bounded customer outcome.

A reusable foundation can reduce integration and validation work, accelerate agent and provider changes, apply governance consistently, and preserve compatibility as models and services evolve.

Managing AI Complexity Without Breaking the Customer Experience

Where This Foundation Leads

The destination is clear: every specialized agent must earn its role by owning a meaningful customer outcome. Vehicle context should be used where it materially improves that outcome, and every capability should operate through a common governed foundation that preserves automaker control and customer trust.

The future of in-car AI is not simply a smarter chatbot or a collection of disconnected agents. It is an experience that understands the customer's goal, brings in the right specialists, and helps the chosen assistant complete that goal safely. One branded assistant. Productized customer journeys. Coordinated specialized agents. Trusted outcomes.
